Photographing engagement portrait sessions is exciting and always filled with emotion, but never more so than when the engagement photographer and the bride-to-be are also mother and daughter. Our youngest daughter Meagan and Jeff both live in Dallas, but Meagan was born in Fort Worth. Knowing that Meagan still has a special place in her […]

It was always important to Lauren that their engagement portrait session include Nick in uniform. She is so very proud of him and his service to our country and the US Navy. We all agreed that the battleship Wisconsin at Nauticus in downtown Norfolk would make the perfect backdrop for the two of them…and it did!

With the late afternoon sun quickly beginning to drift toward dusk, we decided to photograph something a bit more casual…and to have some more fun! I really enjoy a creative photography challenge, so I chose the railroad tracks in Ghent to capture Lauren and Nick…

It all begins when family and friends open the envelope and first see those three little words…‘Save the Date’.

From that point forward, they all become part of an emotional and exciting journey that concludes with the marriage of two very special people.

We chose Little Island Park and Fishing Pier at Sandbridge Beach in Virginia Beach for Michele and Ron’s engagement portrait session. The beach, the light and the water were all perfect…

It has been my experience as a professional wedding photographer that most brides already know exactly what they want by the time they begin to plan their wedding…and Heather was no exception. Because she planned to be married at Sandbridge Beach, it was important for Heather to have her bridal portrait photographed there as well.

At sunrise.

Not a problem…except that Heather lives in Richmond. So, take a minute and think through…

There was not a cloud in the sky above the Signature at West Neck in Virginia Beach. Row after perfect row of white Adirondack chairs were neatly arranged on the Clubhouse lawn in preparation for Danielle and Mike’s outdoor wedding ceremony and the reception to follow on the Verandah. It was destined to be the storybook wedding that every young girl grows up dreaming of…

I met with an excited Mishaell to finalize the details of her bridal portrait session scheduled at the First Lady of Suffolk. A spectacular 8,000 square foot home located in historic downtown Suffolk, it was built in 1907 and has since been fully restored to its original grandeur. Each room has a unique personality and the thematic possibilities are endless. It is truly a bridal photographer’s dream come true.

As we discussed possible directions to take her bridal portrait session, I asked Mishaell what was most important to her about the photographs…

Courtney was excited with the decision to photograph her bridal portrait at the Contemporary Art Center of Virginia Beach…and so was I! Take a stunning bride like Courtney, add an absolutely beautiful wedding dress, then combine them with the rich palette of light, shapes and textures at the Contemporary Art Center and the opportunities for great images are almost limitless. I really enjoyed working with Courtney on both a personal and…

The bride…beautiful, poised and simply bubbling with excitement. The groom…confident, distinguished and truly happy. That is the essence of Cherie and Ty. Both Cherie and Ty are blessed with family and friends who genuinely enjoyed being a part of the glorious celebration of their marriage. From the time the first guests arrived at the Freemason Street Baptist Church in Norfolk to the bride and groom’s last dance at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, it was…

As a wedding photographer, it is both refreshing and rewarding to work with a bride who knows exactly what she wants. From the day we first met, Danielle had a clear vision for her wedding portrait with Aaron…she dreamed of a dramatic nighttime portrait photographed outdoors immediately following their wedding ceremony at NAS Oceana. We visited many unique locations before the wedding day to find the perfect one to fulfill Danielle’s dream. Some…

It is easy to understand why any couple would want to get married in beautiful Virginia Beach and I have had the pleasure of photographing numerous destination weddings here. Because of the travel often required for family and friends to attend, some have been more intimate ceremonies with smaller groups in attendance. However, that was certainly not the case with Ashley and Jared’s destination wedding! With both families traveling from New York…

From the time Cherie arrived for her bridal portrait, it was clear it would be a very special afternoon in front of the camera lens. She was the perfect bride in the perfect dress, and she brought the perfect attitude along with her as well. I shared my ideas for the session with Cherie and we started shooting photos right away! Cherie was truly a bridal photographer’s dream. We spent the next few hours exploring a variety of locations and setups, each one…

Every girl grows up dreaming of that special day when Prince Charming will ride into her life on a white horse and ask for her hand in marriage. And when that moment does finally arrive, it is truly magical. Aaron was destined to be Danielle’s Prince Charming and their magical moment happened at Colonial Williamsburg. It was important to both Danielle and Aaron that we photograph their engagement portrait at Colonial Williamsburg, so they were excited…

As a wedding photographer, you constantly search for the perfect location for that perfect couple and, with time, you always seem to find it. But occasionally, the perfect location simply finds you first. Dedra and Mike had chosen the Yorktown Freight Shed at Riverwalk Landing for their wedding and reception. The area also turned out to be a fabulous setting for their engagement portrait session. Located on a mile long pedestrian walkway weaving…

This is a classic story of two people finding true love in the last place either of them might have expected. Growing up as members of two families who were long time friends, Ashley and Jared were also long time friends. But fate has a funny way of opening the heart. Ashley and Jared started dating while they were in Virginia Beach and soon fell in love. Because of that personal connection with Virginia Beach, it was an easy decision for them to return…

Like many brides and grooms, Ashley and Michael started early and spent a lot of time planning the details of their wedding. Because there are so many things that can easily distract the bride or the groom on their wedding day, it was certainly time well spent. So when that special day did finally arrive, Ashley and Michael’s outdoor wedding celebration was absolutely perfect! I mention this because I cannot recall working with a bride and groom so…

Someone knows someone, who knows someone else, who knows someone else who knows someone…well, you get the idea. The term is ‘six degrees of separation‘ and it was just such a client referral that brought Karen and Steve together with Oak Moon Photography to capture their incredible engagement portrait images. Knowing that Karen and Steve enjoy the beach, I recommended First Landing State Park in Virginia Beach. We met late on…

As an engagement photographer, I encourage all my couples to be intimately involved in planning their engagement portrait session. While most rely solely on me to identify unique locations and to create flattering setups, some have a very clear vision for their engagement photographs…and that was Staci and Christopher. My experience has taught me to simply follow the instincts of those couples and then be prepared to capture lots of really amazing…

There are two unstoppable forces in the universe that march exclusively to the beat of their own drummer…one is true love between a man and a woman and the other is the military. Destinee and David were obviously in love with each other and it was destined to be only a matter of time before they would be married. However, when it became clear that Destinee would be reporting for duty in southern California in January, these two unstoppable forces…

We originally scheduled Ashley and Michael’s engagement portrait session for The Town Center of Virginia Beach but snow fell throughout the entire day that Saturday. As most anyone in Virginia Beach will tell you, it is next to impossible to predict the winter weather here. So when the skies unexpectedly cleared the following day, we quickly decided to take advantage of the crystal clear, but very cold, weather and photograph them in the beautiful late…

The Christmas trees in the Dominion Christian Center in Virginia Beach provided a seasonal backdrop for Jenna and Ralph’s December wedding. It was exciting to photograph a beautiful winter wedding combined with a taste of holiday tradition. Whether something truly silly or something a little more serious, the wedding day will be just…

I am thrilled that Jenna is now married so I can share some of the photographs from her bridal session with you. We chose the Town Center of Virginia Beach as the location for the photo shoot and Jenna was so excited. As a wedding photographer, it was so much fun to work with Jenna. She was also a real trooper when the temperature decided to make a run toward the lower end of the thermometer on the day of her bridal portrait session.

One of the extraordinary benefits of being a wedding photographer is that I have the privilege of working intimately with so many genuinely great couples, and all this begins with the engagement portrait session. It is during the engagement portrait session that the bride and groom first learn they can truly trust me to capture the most important day in their new lives. It is also during this time that I begin to learn more about the essence of both the…

As soon as Carrie described the venue she and Brian had chosen for their wedding, I just knew it would be a wedding photographers dream. Well, it was all that and so much more! Carrie’s decision to use the historic Branch House in Richmond for her bridal portrait worked out great. Currently included in the National Registry of Historic Places, it was built in on picturesque Monument Avenue in 1916. But this wonderful traditional setting was only background scenery, as Carrie…

As a wedding photographer, sometimes the weather can be your best friend and sometimes…well, not so much. It was so much fun photographing Terri. She chose a fabulous garden in Norfolk for her bridal portrait and we scheduled it just before she left for her destination wedding.
