I am working on my portfolio and I have photographed the children, our families, even a friends wedding. I am ready to take that next step but I am not sure where to start. Any advice?
My first step was to choose a dozen of my best images to demonstrate my skill and talent as a photographer to prospective clients. I used 11x14 mounted enlargements featured in a leather art portfolio and immediately started networking. It has been my experience throughout my business career that you can’t wait for the clients to find you, you have to find the clients, so I started by letting everyone in my circle of influence know that I was building my wedding photography business. In retrospect, I spent more time marketing my wedding photography than I did behind the camera during my first year in business.
Hi, Diane! I am meeting with my first bride and her mother next week but I run my photography business out of my home. Where do you meet with prospective clients?
I schedule the initial client meeting at a public location that is convenient for both parties. I prefer Starbucks or Panera Bread because they offer a casual and professional atmosphere. Although most of my prospective clients have visited my website and are already familiar with my work, I always bring my laptop (just in case) and both Starbucks and Panera Bread have WiFi available.
Ask me about my first year in business as a professional wedding photographer…
